S H A D E D

This tut was written on March 7, 2011.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and an optional closeup.
I'm using the work of PinUp Toons.
This tube was purchased when this artist was with CILM.
You may purchase a license to use this work at CDO.

The following filters:
Xero - Fritallary
MuRa's Meister - Copies
Toadie's - Where Are You?

Font of choice (I'm using "Cherish")

Let's begin!

Choose two colors from your tube.
(You may choose two shades of the same color, or two contrasting colors as seen in the sample below.)

Open a new image, 600x250

Fill with your darker color.

Xero - Fritallary using the default settings, but change Variations to 10.

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Add a new layer, fill with the same color.
Xero - Fritallary changing Variations to 9.
Repeat Edge Effects - Enhance.

Add a new layer, fill with the same color.
Xero - Fritallary changing Variations to 8.
Repeat Edge Effects - Enhance.

Add a new layer.

Selection Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Fill with the lighter (or contrasting) color.

Selections - Select None.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Wallpaper (default) setting.
You can change the Number to get different effects.

Duplicate this layer.

On the bottom layer, Toadies - What Are You? using the default settings.
(Both numbers at 20.)
Depending on your background color, you will get different effects.

Effects - Texture Effects - Weave using the following setting:

Highlight the top layer.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 5, 5, 50, 5, black - check the Shadow on new layer box.

Highlight the shadow layer.

Using your Pick tool (other versions Raster Deform tool), pull the shadow layer up to cover the little gap at the top.

Highlight your top layer.

Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise using Uniform, 12.

Add your tube, with the same drop shadow (uncheck the Shadow on new layer box.)

Add a 2px Selection border, using your dark color.

Add your name and all necessary copyright information.

Animate as usual.

For the avatar:

Duplicate your tag (Shift + D.)

Delete the layer with your tube.

Crop to 150x150.

Add your name (or initial.)

Here is another example, using the work of Keith Garvey:
