HOT HOT HOT

This tut was written on October 16, 2010.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and a closeup.
I'm using the work of Ismael Rac. You need to purchase a license to use this work from his store HERE.

The following filters:
Funhouse - Turbine Mirror
Xero - Porcelain (optional)
MuRa's Meister - Copies
Eye Candy 5: Impact - Brushed Metal

A chunky font (I'm using "Media Gothic") and a script font (I'm using "Cat Tail").

Let's begin!

Choose a darker color for the foreground, and a lighter for the background.
Make a foreground gradient - Sunburst, Repeats - 3.

For the background:

Open a new image, 600 x 250.
Floodfill with the gradient
Duplicate this layer.

On the top layer, Distortion Effects - Pixelate set at 15, Symmetric checked.
Edge Effects - Enhance x2.

On the bottom layer, Funhouse - Turbine Mirror using the following setting:

Change the layer setting on the top layer to Soft Light.

Add your closeup, moving into position.
Change the layer setting on the tube layer to Luminance (Legacy).

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

Add your tube, moving into position.
Xero - Porcelain using the default setting (change Blue to 0). (optional)
Add a blurry drop shadow (I used Eye Candy 5: Impact - Perspective Shadow using the default Blurry setting).

For the word art:

Change the foreground gradient to solid color, change the color to black.
Hide the background color.

Using your chunky font, create as Vector with the stroke set to 3, type your word.
Use the handles of the vector to stretch, if necessary.
DO NOT MAKE THE WORD ART TOO TALL!

When you are happy with the size, Objects - Align - Vert. Center in Canvas.
Layers - Convert to Raster Layer.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the following setting:

Magic Wand (Mode set to Add (Shift), click inside EACH letter.

Selections - Modify - Expand by 2.

Add a new layer UNDER your word art, floodfill with either color.

Duplicate the filled layer 3x (for a total of four).
On the bottom layer, add a blurry drop shadow (I used 0, 0, 100, 10, black).
On the top black layer, add a sharp drop shadow (I used 1, 1, 100, 1, black).

Now, for the animation:

On the top filled layer, Eye Candy 5: Brushed Metal using the Linear Steel preset and the following settings:

Repeat for each of the other two filled layers, clicking the Random Seed button each time.

On each filled layer, Edge Effects - Enhance x2.

Add a 2px selection border using the darker color.
Add a 2, 2, 58, 3, black drop shadow.
Add a -2, -2, 58, 3 black drop shadow.

Bring your tube to the top (if necessary).

Add your name and any necessary copyright information.

Animate as usual.

For the avatar:

Duplicate your tag.

Crop to 150 x 150.

If necessary, use the selection tool to delete unwanted stray letters.

Add a 2px selection border.

Add your name or initial.

Here is another example, using the work of Keith Garvey:
