G E A R E D

This tut was written on May 22, 2010.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and a closeup.
I'm using the work of Jessica Dougherty. You need to purchase a license to use this work from CILM.

The following filters:
DSBFlux - Gears and Bright Noise
MuRa's Meister - Copies
Eye Candy 4000 - Swirl

Font of choice (I'm using "Bank Gothic Light")

Let's begin!

Pick two colors from your tube - the lighter shade in the foreground, and the darker in the background.

Open a new image, 600x250.

Floodfill with the following gradient:

Duplicate this layer twice (for a total of three layers).

On the top layer, DSB Flux - Gears using the following setting:

Repeat for the middle layer, but change the Strength to 18.
Repeat for the bottom layer, but change the Strength to 21.

On each layer, Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Working on the top layer, Selection Tool - Custom Selection with the following setting:

DELETE

Keep the selection and DELETE the same area on the other two layers.

Working on the top layer, Layers - Duplicate.

On the duplicate layer, Image - Mirror.

Layers - Merge - Merge Down.

Repeat this for both of the other layers.

You should have something like this, tripled:

Working on the top layer, add a new layer.

Selections Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Floodfill the selection with your darker color (you may have to zoom in to see).

Selection - Select None.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the following setting:

Selections Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Selections - Invert - DELETE
(Make sure you are working on the layer with the thin lines.)

DSB Flux - Bright Noise (Intensity = 40; Mix checked)

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 1, 1, 50, 1, black.

Add a new layer.

Selections Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Floodfill the selection with your lighter color.

Keep the selection active and Eye Candy 4000 - Swirl using the Large Whirlpools setting.

Selections - Select None.

Selections - Select All.
Selections - Float.
Selections - Defloat.

Add your closeup as a new layer, placing where you wish.

Selections - Invert.

DELETE.

(You may wish to change the layer setting to Soft Light or another option.)

Selections - Invert.

Add a new layer above your tube.

Selections - Modify - Select Selections Borders using the following setting:

Floodfill the selection with your darker color.

Selections - Select None.

Working on the swirled layer, add a blurry drop shadow (I used 0, 0, 100, 50, black.)

Add your tube as a new layer and add the same drop shadow.

Add a new layer with a 2pixel Selection Border, filled with your darker color.
(You may have to crop the tube layer to 600x250 first.)

Layers - Arrange - Move Down (below the tube layer.)

Add your name and all necessary copyright information.

TO ANIMATE

Hide the bottom two background layers, then Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - As New Animation.

Back in PSP, hide the top background layer, and unhide the middle layer, then Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - After Current Frame.

REPEAT using the middle layer (so you have two "middle layers" in AS.)

Back in PSP, hide the middle background layer, and unhide the bottom layer, then Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - BEFORE Current Frame.

You will have an image with four frames in AS.

In AS, Edit - Select All.

Animation - Frame Properties.

Change the number in the box from 10 to 35.

For the avatar:

Duplicate your tag (Shift + D.)

Remove any layers containing art.

Crop to 150x150.

Add your 2 pixel selections border and drop shadow.

Add your name (or initial.)

You may, if you wish, animate the avatar in the same way.

Here is another example, using the work of Sanju:

Jenny, you need to host your tags on PB or somewhere.

Loved the tut  Rich, thanks!  I didn't animate, I tried but must have chosen the wrong colours as the effect wasn't right!

excellent examples!

when you're filling the image using the gradient, you want to use the foreground gradient.
(meaning that you create your gradient in the foreground box...i don't know how else to describe it.)

that might be the reason for some of the variations we've seen...

in any case, what you've created with the tut is wonderful!
