S I M I L A R

This tut was written on February 03, 2012.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube (you may also use a tube and a closeup).
I'm using the work of Lielman.
This is an exclusive tube; a license and others tubes by this artist may be purchased from PicsForDesign.

These filters:
Xero - Fritallary
MuRa's Meister - Copies
Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow

Font of choice (I used "Katfish LET").

Pick a medium/dark color from your tube as your foreground color; set your background to white.

This tut shows how to make a forum set tag/avatar using no scrapkits and no templates.
We will make the larger tag first, then the avatar and forum set tag.

There is a lot of leeway in this tut; plenty of ways for you to personalize your work.

Let's begin!

STEP ONE

Open a new image, 15 pixels square.

Scroll (or Zoom) in so that you can see what you're doing.

Using your preset circle, draw a circle in this tiny square.
(Make sure both colors are showing and Line Width = 2; Create as Vector checked)
Start in the upper left corner and draw down to the lower right corner; try not to get too close to the edges.

Object - Align - Center in Canvas; then Layers - Convert to Raster Layer.

Image - Canvas Size to 600 pixels wide by 400 pixels high, centered.

STEP TWO

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Tiling option; set the Tile Gap to 2.
(You can also use the Tiling(angle) option with the same Tile Gap.)

Using your Magic Wand, click on any white circle of the Tiling layer.

Selections - Modify - Select Similar with the following setting:

All the white circles should be selected.

KEEP SELECTED and Xero - Fritallary using these numbers in the boxes, going down: 1, 30, 10, 100.

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Selections - Select None.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 5, 5, 50, 5, black.

Hide this layer for now.

STEP THREE

Change your white foreground to black.

When you created the vector circle, there should be a blank layer under the Tiling layer.
If there is, highlight the blank layer now.
If there isn't, add a new layer under the Tiling layer.

Either way, floodfill with black.

Xero - Fritallary using the default setting (click the Reset button).

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow using the default setting, but change the Intensity from 128 to 255.

Add a new layer, floodfill with your chosen color.
Change the setting of the color layer to Overlay.

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.
(Depending on the color chosen you may want to omit this Enhance effect;
this Enhance may distort the color too much.)

Set this image aside for a bit; we need to work with your tube.

STEP FOUR

You need two copies of your tube; one regular-size and one resized to 400 pixels high.

Set the regular-size tube aside for bit.

Open a new image, 210 pixels wide by 400 pixels high

Floodfill with black.

Add the resized tube as a new layer.

Duplicate the tube.

On the bottom tube, change the setting to Luminance (Legacy); change the opacity to 45.
On the top tube, change the opacity to 25.

Add a new layer; add a 2px Selection border (Inside, 2, Anti-alias unchecked) using your chosen color.

STEP FIVE

Hide one of your tube layers, then Edit - Copy Merged.

Add this merged layer to the 600x400 image as a new layer.

Hide the unhidden tube layer and hide the other tube layer, then Edit - Copy Merged.

Add this merged layer to the 600x400 image as a new layer.

This is where you have a lot of room to play.
You can choose which layer to put on top, choose to mirror one of the images.

Just try to avoid "cutting into" the small circles on the Tiling layer below.
The effect of the final tag is much stronger with full circles.

The two tube layers can overlap, if you wish.

Scroll (or Zoom) in to make perfect edges; making sure both tube layers meet the edge of the 600x400 image.

STEP SIX

When both tube layers are in place, add your regular-size tube as a new layer, moving it into position.
Add a blurry drop shadow (I used 0, 10, 100, 20, black).

Add a new layer; add a 2px Selection border using your chosen color.

Add your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

STEP SEVEN

To make the forum set tag, duplicate your 600x400 tag (Shift + D).

Carefully crop to 600x250; avoid "cutting into" the circles on the Tiling layer.

Add your 2px Selection border.

Add your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

You can, if you wish, rearrange the three tube layers into a different pattern for this forum set tag.

For the avatar, make a copy of the 600x250 tag.

Crop to 150x150.

Add your name (or initial) and any necessary copyright information.

To make the black part of the avatar, I created a smaller image and added it to the cropped 150x150 tag.

Simply make a new 100 wide by 150 high image.
Floodfill with black.
Add a 2px Selection border using your chosen color.

Add this to the avatar, moving into position.

Here is another example, using a wonderful image by Jennifer Janesko.
This example shows the Tiling (angle) option:
