C I R C L E

This tut was written on February 02, 2012.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and a closeup; you may also use a tube with an image (or even just an image).
I'm using the work of Renee Biertempfel.
A license and tubes for this artist may be purchased from CDO.

These filters:
MuRa's Meister - Copies
Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow
L&K - Trixie
VM - Transmission (not Ray Transmission)

Font of choice (I used "Alice").

You will need this pattern; right click and save to your Patterns folder.
(The pattern is called "Gold Beads", you may already have it):

Set your background to this pattern.

Resize your tubes, if necessary.

This tut shows how to make a forum set tag/avatar using no scrapkits and no templates.
We will make the larger tag first, then the avatar and forum set tag.

Let's begin!

STEP ONE

Open a new image, 20 pixels square.

Selections - Select All.

Selections - Modify - Select Selection Border using Inside, 2, Anti-alias unchecked.

Floodfill the selection with the Gold Beads pattern.

Selectons - Select None.

STEP TWO

Image - Canvas Size to 600 pixels wide by 400 pixels high, centered.

Image - Free Rotate by 45, Left.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Encircle option with the following setting:

Duplicate this circle and hide the layer for now.

Back on the original circle layer, MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Line option; change the number from 8 to 5.

You can hide this layer for now, too.

IF YOU ARE MAKING A FORUM SET TAG/AVATAR, DUPLICATE THIS IMAGE NOW (Shift + D)

STEP THREE

Highlight the hidden top layer, and add a new layer.

Change the Gold Beads pattern to a darker shade of your chosen color.
Make a gradient - Linear, Angle = 90, Repeat = 0.

Floodfill the new layer with your gradient.

Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow; all numbers set to 50.

Duplicate this layer, then Image - Mirror; hide the duplicate layer for now.

Highlight the original Cross Shadow layer, then Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise using Uniform, 25, Monochrome checked.

Duplicate this layer one more time; you can hide the original layer.

Right now, you should have only one layer unhidden.

STEP FOUR

On this unhidden layer, L&K Trixie using the following setting:

VM - Transmission using the default setting (Line Width - 6, Offset - 0, Contrast - 40).

Repeat the Transmisson two more times, for a total of three.

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Change the opacity of this layer to 35.

Unhide the Cross Shadow layer below this layer, then Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

STEP FIVE

Unhide the MuRa's Line layer (which should be the 2d layer down from the top).

Using your Magic Wand, click in the space ABOVE and BELOW the circular element.

Selections - Modify - Expand by 1; then Selections - Modify.

In your layer pallete, highlight the mirrored Cross Shadow layer (2d layer up from the bottom).

DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Highlight the MuRa's Line layer and add this drop shadow: 0, 5, 100, 5, black.

STEP SIX

Unhide the single Encircle layer (on top).

Using the Magic Wand, click in the center of the circle.

Selections - Modify - Expand by 1.

Add a new layer BELOW the Encircle layer.

Floodfill with the gradient.

Add your closeup as a new layer, moving into position (above the new gradient layer).

Selections - Select None.

Add the Cross Shadow to the gradient layer.

Change the setting of the closeup layer to Luminance (Legacy),
change the opacity of the closeup layer to 75ish.

Make sure all your layers are unhidden.

You should have, from the bottom:
The merged Transmission layer.
The Cross Shadow layer that has had part deleted.
The Line element
The Cross Shadow layer for the single frame.
Your closeup tube.
The single Encircle layer.
Your regular tube.

STEP SEVEN

Add your regular-sized tube as a new layer; use the following drop shadow: 0, 10, 100, 20, black.

Add your 2px selection border in your chosen color.

Add your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

We will animate the tag at the end of this tut.

For the forum set tag/avatar, continue on:

STEP EIGHT

Move to the duplicate image you set aside earlier.

Image - Resize to 250 pixels high
(The width should be 375).

Adjust - Sharpness - Sharpen.

Image - Canvas Size to 750 pixels wide by 250 pixels high, center left button pushed.

Duplicate the Line element; then Image - Mirror.

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

Duplicate this layer; then Layers - Merge - Merge Visible again.

STEP NINE

Add a new layer UNDER this merged Line layer.

Floodfill with the gradient; repeat the Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow (all numbers set to 50.)

Highlight the Line layer; use the Magic Wand above and below the element.

Selections - Modify - Expand by 1; then Selections - Invert.

Highlight the Cross Shadow, then DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Add the drop shadow (0, 5, 100, 5, black) to the Line element.

Add your tube with the drop shadow (0, 10, 100, 20, black).

Add your 2px selection border, your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

STEP TEN

For the avatar, duplicate the forum set tag.

Remove the tube layer.

Crop to 150 px square.

Add your 2px selection border, plus your name (or initial).

Save as a .png file.

STEP ELEVEN

To animate your tag and forum set tag, make sure all layers of both images are unhidden.

Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - As New Animation.

Back in PSP, highlight the bottom Transmission layer; then Image - Flip.

Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - After Selected Frame.

Change the frame properties of both frames to 45.

Save as a .gif.

Here is another example, using a wonderful image by Keith Garvey:
