W I P E

This tut was written on January 29, 2012.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and a closeup.
I'm using the work of Jose Cano, formerly signed with MPT.
A license and tubes for this artist may be purchased from PTE.

These filters:
Xero - Porcelain
MuRa's Meister - Copies

Font of choice (I used "Varsity").

Set your foreground to black, set your background to a color from your tube.
Make a background linear gradient - Angle = 90, Repeats = 0.
You want the color facing to the right.

This tut shows how to make a forum set tag/avatar using no scrapkits and no templates.
We will make the larger tag first, then the avatar and forum set tag.

Let's begin!

On both tubes, Xero - Porcelain using the default setting; all boxes in Channel Tuning set to 0.
I realize that there are different versions of the Porcelain filter, I hope these instructions are adequate.

Set both tubes aside for a bit.

Open a new image, 100 pixels wide by 5 pixels high.

Floodfill this tiny image (zoom in, if necessary) with your gradient.

Image - Canvas Size to 800x800, centered.

Add a new layer, floodfill it with black.

Layers - Arrange - Send to bottom.

Highlight the top layer.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the *Wave(vertical) option and the following setting:

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the *Line option and the default setting.

Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise using Uniform, 45, Monochrome checked.

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

Selection Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Duplicate your layer, then Image - Mirror.

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

Selection Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Image - Crop to Selection.

Edit - Copy.

Now we will move to AS.

In AS, Edit - Paste - As New Animation.

We need six frames, so either:
Edit - Paste - After Selected Frame five times OR
Hold down the Shift + CTRL keys at the same time and click the "L" key five times.

Either way, click in the FIRST FRAME (very important!) and Edit - Select All (or CTRL + A).

There will be blue lines around each frame.

Effects - INSERT IMAGE TRANSITION, first this setting (pay attention to the numbers in the lower left corner).
When those are set, click on the Customize box, and choose the setting in the 2nd screenshot:

Click OK, then click OK again.

Your animation now has twelve frames; we need to get rid of six of them.
You can either:
Roll your scroll wheel toward you until you can see the numbers below the frame OR
Click on the Zoom tool in the toolbar just above the upper left corner of the default
workspace and choose Zoom 1:6.

Either way, there are six frame that have D: 10 below them; these are the frames we are going to remove.

To do that, hold down your CTRL key and click in each of these six D: 10 frames.

DELETE.

Now, we have the six frames in our final animation; let's set the speed.

Edit - Select All; then Animation - Frame Properties.
Change number from 33 to 15, click OK.

The animation is done.

Let's move back to PSP.

Working on the 600x400 image, add your closeup tube as a new layer and move into position.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 0, 20, 100, 20, black.

Add a new layer and make a 2px Selection border using your chosen color.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 2, 2, 58, 3, black and -2, -2, 58, 3, black.

Add your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

Hide the background layer; then Edit - Copy Merged.

Over in AS, Edit - Paste - As New Animation.

We need six frames of this, so make six frames the same way you did earlier.

We will merge both of open animations together.

Make sure that all frames of both animations are selected (Edit - Select All).

On the animation with the tube, Edit - Copy.

On the animation you made first, Edit - Paste Into Selected Frames.

Carefully guide the animation into place.

Do NOT remove your finger from the mouse until the move is complete.
(If you make a mistake, either Edit - Undo or click the Alt + "Backspace" keys at the same time.)

When you are happy, save the animation as a .gif file.
If you are going to make a matching forum set tag, DO NOT CLOSE THIS ANIMATION.

TO MAKE THE FORUM SET TAG

First, Edit - Undo until the tube is gone (likely once or twice).
You can also click Alt + Backspace (likely twice).
If you find that you have went too far back and removed some of the frames of your animation,
you can Edit - Redo until you have your original six frames.

When the tube is gone, click on the Crop tool in the toolbar directly above the
upper left corner of the default workspace (fourth from the left).

An Options box will appear above the toolbar; click on that.
Use these settings, then click the Crop box:

The animation for your forum set tag is ready.

Click in the first frame of this new animation and Edit - Copy.

Back in PSP, Edit - Paste As New Image.

Add your regular size tube, moving into position.

Repeat the same drop shadow (0, 20, 100, 20, black).

Add a new layer and your 2px selection border; repeat the drop shadow for the border (2, 2, 58, 3, black and -2, -2, 58, 3, black).

Add your name, any word art and all necessary copyright information.

Hide the background layer, then Edit - Copy Merged.

In AS, Edit - Paste - As New Animation.

Repeat the same steps you completed to make the 600x400 tag.

When you are done, save a .gif file.
If you are going to make a matching avatar, DO NOT CLOSE THIS ANIMATION.

TO MAKE A MATCHING AVATAR

Repeat the same steps you completed to make the forum set tag,
except Crop using the following setting:

Click in the first frame of the cropped animation, then Edit - Copy.

In PSP, Edit - Paste As New Image.

Add your 2px Selection border, your name (or initial), and any necessary copyright information.
Don't forget the Drop Shadow on your border layer.

Save as a .png file.

Here is another example, using the work of Keith Garvey:
