S W I S S

This tut was written on January 31, 2012.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube and a closeup.
I'm using the work of Elias Chatoudis, formerly of MPT.
A license and tubes for this artist may be purchased from PTE.

These filters:
Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow
MuRa's Meister - Copies

Font of choice (I used "Katfish LET").

Choose a medium color from your tube; set your other color to white.

This tut shows how to make a forum set tag/avatar using no scrapkits and no templates.
We will make the larger tag first, then the avatar and forum set tag.

Let's begin!

STEP ONE

Open a new image, 20 pixels square.

Zoom in so you can see what you're doing, then Select - Select All.

Selections - Modify.

Selections - Select Selection Border using Inside, 2, Anti-alias unchecked.

Floodfill the selection with white.

Add a new layer; floodfill the selection with your chosen color.

Selections - Select None.

STEP TWO

Open a new image, 800 pixels square.

Add both of the layers of the 20x20 image to this new 800x800 image (as two New Layers); color 20x20 image on top.
Hide them both for now.

Add a new layer, floodfill with your color.

Duplicate this layer; on the top color layer - Graphics Plus - Cross Shadow, all settings to 50.

Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise using Uniform, 45, Monochrome checked.

STEP THREE

Unhide and highlight the white 20x20 layer (which should be 2nd from the top).

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Tiling option; change the Tile Gap from 0 to 1.

Using your Magic Wand, carefully click on any space between the white boxes.

Highlight the Noise layer; DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Change the opacity of both the Noise layer and the Tiling layer to 20.

Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.

This is the background layer.

Add a new layer, floodfill with white.

Duplicate this new white layer.

Change the opacity of the bottom white layer to 20; change the opacity of the top white layer to 40.

Hide both new white layers for now.

STEP FOUR

Move back to the 20x20 image you created first.

Floodfill the top layer with white.

Image - Resize to 8 pixels square.

Add this tiny square, as a new layer, to the 800x800 image.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Tiling(angle) option and the following setting:

Add the same Noise you used earlier (Uniform, 45, Monochrome checked).

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 0, 5, 50, 5, black.

STEP FIVE

Unhide and highlight the top 20x20 color border layer.

Image - Free Rotate - 45, left (or right Smiley).

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the *Wave(horizontal) option and the following setting:

Using your Magic Wand, click in the area ABOVE the wavy line.

Selections - Modify - Expand by 1.

Selections - Invert.

Highlight and DELETE both the Tiling(angle) layer and the TOP white layer.

Selections - Select None.

Highlight the top wavy layer; add the following Drop Shadow - 1, 1, 100, 1, black.

Crop this finished image to 600 wide by 400 high.

We will use this finished image to create all three of our final tags.

STEP SIX

First, duplicate your image (Shift + D), this duplicate will serve as your finished 600x400 tag.

On the original image, crop to 600 wide by 250 high.

Duplicate this image, the duplicate will serve as your finished 600x250 forum set tag.

On the original image, crop to 150 pixels square.

This final 150x150 image is your avatar.

Add a 2px Selection border using your chosen color.

Add your name (or initial)

STEP SEVEN

On both the 600x400 image and your 600x250 image, add your tube;
the closeup to the larger image, the regular-sized tube to the other.

On both tubes, add a blurry drop shadow (I used 0, 20, 100, 30, black).

On both images, add a 2px Selection Border using your chosen color.

On both images, add your name, any word art, and all necessary copyright information.

Here is another example, using the beautiful work of Jennifer Janesko:
