S T A I R C A S E

This tut was written on March 25, 2011.
It is written using PSPX; I'm sure the same effects are available in other versions.

SUPPLIES
A tube.
I'm using the work of Jennifer Janesko.
This tube was purchased when this artist was with CILM.
You may purchase a license to use this work at CDO.

The following filters:
MuRa's Meister - Copies
MuRa's Meister - Cloud

Font of choice (I'm using "Nana")

Let's begin!

Choose a light color from your tube and a darker shade of the same color for your background.

Make a linear gradient - Angle = 90, Repeats = 0.
It doesn't matter which color is on the left.

Open a new image, 100x10.

Fill with your gradient.

Image - Canvas Size to 600x350, centered.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Duplicate preset, changing the number from 2 to 40.

We have to get rid of the bits in the corners.

Selection Tool set to Freehand Selection, Point to Point.

Carefully draw around the whole diagonal "stripe".

Selections - Invert.

DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Duplicate this layer.

Highlight the bottom layer.

MuRa's Meister - Copies using the Line preset at the default setting.

Effects - Edge Effects - Enhance.

Selection Tool - Custom Selection using the following setting:

Image - Crop to Selection.

Highlight the bottom layer.

Adjust - Add/Remove Noise - Add Noise using Uniform, 12, Monochrome unchecked.

Add a new layer.

MuRa's Meister - Cloud using the default setting.
You may have to hit the Reset button.

Change the layer setting to Multiply.

Add the same noise to this layer.

Highlight the top "diagonal stripe" layer.

Selections - Select All.
Selections - Float.
Selections - Defloat.

Highlight the Clouds layer.

DELETE.

Selections - Select None.

Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow using 0, 0, 50, 5, black.

DELETE the "diagonal stripe" layer.

Add your tube and a blurry drop shadow (I used Eye Candy 5 Impact - Perspective Shadow).

Add a new layer.
Add a 2px Selection border, using your dark color.

Add your name and all necessary copyright information.

For the avatar:

Duplicate your tag (Shift + D.)

Remove all necessary layers.

Crop to 150x150.

Add a new layer.

Add a 2px Selection border, using your dark color.

Add your name  (or initial) and all necessary copyright information.

Here is another example, using the work of Keith Garvey:
